Undertaking job interviews is painful. I tell myself this in order to assuage the post-interview shakes––burning cheeks, prickly fingers––though it rarely helps. There’s a specific feeling of debilitation that a job interview invokes. It literally feels like groping in the darkness.

There’s the task of guessing at an employer’s needs and inferring from his tone and bearing what he wants. There’s the fear of turning into Joe Biden or having metallic breath from stomach knots. Lots of things. The mystery of self-presentation, of how to act, steepens.

Recovery generally takes a day or two. Then you’re an outpatient, racked with intermittent symptoms until the position is filled by you or, more likely, someone else.
