Why do hotels buy beautiful HDTVs and drive them with stretched SD pictures and mono sound?

good question.

Because you can’t split an HD signal 250 ways cheaply. For most big == HD anyway.

and since most people are in a hotel room for a very short amount of time, they’re not really going to care all that much about an HD vs. SD picture.
